FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why choose NZCCM for Acupuncture and TCM training?  Top

  1. You can graduate with our Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture after three years study (so you can become an ACC-accredited acupuncturist)
     
  2. You can graduate with our Bachelor of Health Science in Chinese Medicine after four years’ study (so you can become a Chinese Herbalist, and an ACC-accredited acupuncturist)
     
  3. A Bachelor of Health Science is an internationally recognised qualification therefore you have the possibility of doing post-graduate study, or practicing, overseas.
     
  4. The programme has been endorsed by NZASA (New Zealand Acupuncture Standards Authority),  a recognized ACC registration body, so graduates from the programme will be eligible to become ACC accredited acupuncture treatment providers.
     
  5. The programme meets Immigration New Zealand requirements so graduates can apply for a work permit and permanent residency

NZCCM offers unique opportunities for TCM students:

  • All our qualifications and courses are fully recognised by the NZ Ministry of Education, through registration and approval  by NZQA and TEC
  • The majority of our TCM tutors have a Bachelor and Masters in Acupuncture or TCM from China or Australia, Canada or USA.
  • The majority of our tutors have also worked in clinical practice for a long time and have their own speciality,  hence bringing current and relevant experience to class
  • The majority of our tutors have a formal Adult Education qualification or equivalent
  • Our courses are intensive and provide authentic training in TCM,  giving you an opportunity to experience wider training. Our TCM academic programme is the first in New Zealand based on the Chinese universities' programme approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Therefore Chinese universities accept each year of our training as equivalent to each year of training in China

What are the general course entry criteria?  Top

International Students:

  • 18 years of age or over
  • Completed all immigration procedures
  • Have completed 6th Form Certificate NCEA level 2, or an equivalent international secondary school qualification
  • English to level 6.5 on the IELTS academic scale or 560 on the TOEFL scale. Test results should be current (i.e obtained within two years of your application date with our college) or if a student has studied fulltime within New Zealand for a period of two years and completed NCEA level 2 or above.

Domestic Students:

  • Proof of New Zealand citizenship or permanent residence
  • Have completed 6th Form Certificate NCEA level 2, or an equivalent international secondary school qualification
  • If English is an applicants second language, competency in English is required to a level 6.0 on the IELTS academic scale or 560 on the TOEFL scale. Test results should be current (i.e. obtained within two years of your application date with our college) or if a student has studied fulltime within New Zealand for two years and completed the qualification that they studied.

What are the Bachelor course tuition fees for 2011?  Top

     International Students:

  • Full time bachelor courses costs is $18,500 for new student, but would be a 5% discount for returning student , meaning $17,575 per year
  • Part time courses costs depends on the subject 
  • Fee for additional qualification depends on the subject that the student chooses.

      Domestic Students:

  • Full time bachelor courses costs $7,890 per year
  • Part time course costs depend on the subject
  • Fee for the first additional qualification depends on the subject that the student chooses.

      All fees shown are GST Inclusive: Fees for Bachelors degree are being reviewed at the moment.

What does Studylink cover?  Top

Studylink financial assistance is available to domestic students for full tution fees, course related costs and living costs. To find out more go to www.studylink.govt.nz or phone 0800 889900.

Are there any other fees or costs associated with studying at your college?  Top

Our prospectus describes all costs associated with study at NZCCM, including tuition fees which is the price of the course, course related costs which is the materials needed to support learning i.e textbooks, course handouts and other related learning aids. Some of these items are mandatory while others are optional. Course related costs are estimated to a maximum of $1,000 per year per course. Our application registration fee is an additional $200 and must be paid at time of enrolment. This fee applies each time an application is lodged, at NZCCM's discretion.

The maximum a domestic student can borrow against course related with Studylink is $1,000 per course. 

What are some of the benefits for your graduates?  Top

NZCCM Graduates can register in New Zealand immediately as ACC registered health providers and go into practice as an Acupuncturist.

Due to our link with the Liaoning University and other Chinese Universities in China our diploma graduates can undertake a further two years of study and complete their 5-year bachelor degree in China. Furthermore, our graduates have been allowed to cross-credit their NZCCM study towards the bachelor degree at the Universities in Australia or USA.

It is also possible to undertake part of the clinical practicum assignment in China.

Since 2007, NZCCM provides six scholarships for Acupuncture clinical practice in China, for senior students every year.

International students can apply for permanent residency under New Zealand's skilled migrant policy. Check this at www.nzis.govt.nz

International students note that Acupuncturists and Herbalists are recognized as health professions by New Zealand Immigration Services. Check this at  www.nzis.govt.nz under employment professions.

How do I apply for one of your courses?  Top

Simply fill in our enrolment application, attach all of the required documents you have available and submit this to us with the application fee of $200.

Our application form can be downloaded from our website from Enrol Now or Downloads.

We will contact you immediately once we have reviewed your application. All applicants are interviewed prior to study place acceptance is approved.  

Can I apply for more than one course if I choose?  Top

The immediate answer is yes, however this decision involves careful review and assessment of each individual application by our academic counsel prior to approval.

If this is an option you wish to undertake, we advise you meet to plan this pathway with our Academic Principal, Jessica Li Feng.

Do you have part time courses?  Top

Yes, part time courses are available for all diploma courses subject to applicant numbers. Please check with our administration office to find out which part time courses are available.

What happens if my enrolment application is unsuccessful?  Top

Your application application fee of $200 is refunded.

Are your courses government approved (NZQA Accredited)?  Top

Yes: all NZCCM Acupuncture and TCM courses are fully accredited by NZQA, and NZQA audit our Quality Management System regularly. 

What is your academic calendar?  Top

The first day of our academic year is 7 February 2011, which is orientation day for February classes. There will possibly be a Semester 2 intake starting 1 August 2010. 

What are the course class numbers?  Top

The average class size is fifteen (15) students with the maximum class size of 30 students.

Are your courses recognised internationally?  Top

Yes.  Our BHSc course has been endorsed by the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies.  This organization covers 200 TCM professional organizations around approximately 60 countries.  These include England, USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
In particular, our course has been recognized by the Foundation of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Societies of Australia.
Both the content and hours of our BHSc( Acupuncture) programme of 3 years is the equivalent of the 4yr degree course offered in Australia.  Similarly our 4yr degree (content and hours) is the equivalent of the 5yr degree offered in Australia.
We are confident our programme meets the registration requirements of these countries.  However, please note that within Australia and USA recognition of practice requirements differ from state to state.
