The New Zealand Certificate in English Language – Academic (Level 5) 

DURATION – 20 Weeks Full Time Only

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language – Academic (Level 5) prepares the student to move into any programme that requires IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. It provides students with the opportunity to be fully immersed into English Language in New Zealand, ensuring they are adequately prepared for their studies and placements.

Successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 5) meets the English Language entry requirements for NZCCM’s Master of Chinese Medicine degree programme.

This programme is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) high B2.

The New Zealand Certificate in English Language – Academic (Level 5) prepares the student to move into any programme that requires IELTS 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. It provides students with the opportunity to be fully immersed into English Language in New Zealand, ensuring they are adequately prepared for their studies and placements.

Successful completion of New Zealand Certificate in English Language (Level 5) meets the English Language entry requirements for NZCCM’s Master of Chinese Medicine degree programme.


 
Target Learner

The programme is intended for learners who wish to undertake higher-level tertiary study, particularly in programmes related to health science. It also aims to meet the needs and aspirations of learners who need advanced academic English knowledge and skills to be successful in future training and employment. This programme is at a level comparable to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) high B2.


 

Outcome on Completion of This Certificate

A graduate will be able to:

  • Understand main ideas and supporting details of extended, complex oral texts of academic or professional relevance on a wide range of topics.
  • Participate confidently, flexibly, and effectively in extended spoken academic discourse on a wide range of topics of academic and professional relevance.
  • Understand extended, complex written texts of academic or professional relevance on a wide range of topics.
  • Write well-structured, sophisticated, extended texts of academic or professional relevance on a wide range of topics.
  • Integrate listening, reading, writing and speaking of academic or professional relevance on a wide range of topics.
  • Conduct research and produce a mini academic research proposal.

This programme is made up of four fundamental components and two integrated components which cover the skill areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing for academic purposes.

To be admitted to the NZCEL5 programme at NZCCM, all candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • be aged a minimum of 18 years old at the start of the programme; and
  • have English as an additional language; and
  • be a New Zealand citizen or have a Residence Class Visa (i.e., Resident Visa, Permanent Resident Visa); or
  • hold a student visa.

Note: This programme is solely delivered face-to-face. International students must have a valid visa to enrol in the NZCEL5 programme. Students are not able to study online from their home country and student visa holders are not permitted to study this programme solely via online delivery.

In order to be accepted into the NZCEL5 programme at NZCCM, a candidate must meet one of the following English language requirements: 

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.0 with no individual score below 5.5 (within the last 2 years); or
  • Pearson’s Test of English (PTE Academic): 50 with no band score below 42; or
  • New Zealand Certificate of English Language (NZCEL): Level 4 (Academic) [NZQA Ref: 1883] or Level 4 (General) [NZQA Ref: 3669]
Tuition Fees

Domestic students – $3369 inclusive of GST per annum   — Student Loan Available.

International Students – $7845 inclusive of GST per annum early payment discounts are available, if tuition fees are paid one month in advance of the start day.

Estimated Course-Related Costs – $250 inclusive of GST per annum.
